With no disrespect intended to the other athletes, the last time Clintwood was truly competitive in any sport was during the Justin Hamilton years. But realistically athletes of that caliber don't come along that often.

I have to totally dagree with that statement. Clintwood has had one of the better football teams in the Region the past 3 or 4 years. Hamilton's senior season of football the teams record was only 5-5. Over the past 4 years Clintwoods record in football is 26-14 which is not to shabby IMO.

One thing, that is being overlooked when talking about the young team. Clintwood has, how many juniors that play(ed) on the football team this past year? It is an extremely small number, Counts could probably give a number. That translated over into all sports, it it a relatively low number class. There is some logic about not wanting to raid your JV team, but there is also the logic of not just wanting bodies there for the sake of bodies. I mean there is already several freshmen on the varsity team, and having others there wouldn't be a solution, as it helps some of them having more playing time/experience on the jv team than it would have them sitting on the varsity bench. Of the 9 players that have been on the varsity this year, well 9 that have been on it the majority of the year, there are 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 1 sophomore, 4 freshmen. I think thats right there may be a freshman thats a soph. or such. That's a young team, and it would be nice if some upper class players were there, especially if they played the game well, but thats just the situation right now.
Hopefully if they continue to bust their butts and play ball the way they are being coached, the future is a lot brighter.
What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it.
Not at all, LPD.
I have no personal bias toward or against Clintwood. I brought this topic to the forum because I'm genuinely interested in what others think could turn this team around - if anything.
I really don't think this is a "bandwagon" type of fan support going on here. There is just an overall lack of interest in any sport other than football.
I would also suggest that any school - not just Clintwood - that doesn't have support and interest in a particular sport needs to take a long hard look and what is working and what is not.

cvcgrad...Maybe that is the message you want to portray, but any team that is 3-10 will have issues with fan support. The kids are playing hard and that is all that matters. I am all for the "support 'em no matter what," idea, but a majority of any teams fans come and go with winning. I remember a few years back when Honaker played Haysi over at Honaker in a Region D playoff game how empty the visiting side was. This year, the Haysi side during the Region D playoffs was full. Bandwagon? It's a part of sports.

I would agree that Clintwood had a couple of good teams in 2003 when they were 8-2 and again in 2004 when they were 7-3. Despite an upset over Powell Valley, the 2005 team finished the season 4-6 with two embarrassing shutouts at the hands of Haysi and Pound on their own field.
Even having good teams in 2003 and 2004, Clintwood hasn't had an LPD championship since they were co-champions with Powell Valley in 1999. Prior to that, their last LPD title was in 1987. I believe Clintwood's last Region D Championship was somewhere around 1979.
If I remember correctly, the 2001 season (2-8) was the school's worst season in football since around 1988 when Meade took over after Ralph Cummins' retirement.
For the past 15 years or so, being competitive in LPD football and having a legitimate shot at the championship has meant that the team was able to beat either Powell Valley or Gate City.
Justin Hamilton is by no means the only good athlete to come out of Clintwood in recent years, but he was certainly one of the best. His years at Clintwood gave them a competitive edge I haven't seen in a long time.

We were actually 3-7 that year, but I'll give it to you, we were horriable. We had 3 sophmores starting on the offensive line and 6 of out 11 starters on both sides of the ball were either sophmores or freshman. And I think that we were 5-5 this past season and not 4-6.

Sorry. My mistake. It was 1988 that Clintwood went 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the district.
As for the 2005 record, from G'Man's swvafootball.com
Date Opponent Result
8/26 @ Grundy 44-15 W
9/2 Haysi 0-20 L
9/9 @ Appalachia 12-20 L
9/16 Lee 32-6 W
9/23 @ Coeburn 41-7 W
9/30 Powell Valley 15-6 W
10/7 OPEN
10/14 @ Gate City 20-35 L
10/21 J.J. Kelly 55-16 W
10/28 @ J.I. Burton 0-6 L
11/4 Pound 0-14 L
I'm counting 5-5 too.
